Computing

🖥️ Computing Curriculum

“Technology, like art, is a soaring exercise of the human imagination.” – Daniel Bell

Our Intent

At SS Peter & Paul Catholic Primary School, we prepare every child for a rapidly changing technological world by giving them the skills to become confident, creative and responsible users of technology.

We want pupils to see technology as an opportunity – not a challenge – so they feel empowered rather than overwhelmed.

Our curriculum is built around the refreshed Purple Mash 2025 Computing Scheme, adapted to meet the needs of all learners, including those with SEND and EAL. Children develop:

  • Computational thinking and problem-solving skills

  • Digital literacy for safe communication and online collaboration

  • Programming confidence, from block coding in KS1 to Python in KS2

  • Information technology skills, such as documents, spreadsheets, presentations, animations and audio

Technology is embedded across the curriculum – from green-screen film projects to digital music composition – making learning engaging, purposeful and memorable.

We also deliver online safety lessons every term using 2BeSafe, fully aligned with Education for a Connected World and KCSIE expectations.

By the end of Key Stage 2, our pupils can:

  • Select the most appropriate digital tools for a task

  • Use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly

  • Approach new and emerging technologies with confidence, creativity and independence

Implementation

Computing is taught in weekly lessons using Purple Mash’s comprehensive resources, including step-by-step teaching slides, practical tasks and interactive tools.

Curriculum Strands

  • Computer Science: coding, algorithms, micro:bits, Python programming

  • Information Technology: presentations, spreadsheets, data handling, animation, video and audio creation

  • Digital Literacy: research, communication, blogging and responsible online behaviour

Key Features of Our Approach

  • 1:1 PedTech Model: iPads in Years 3–4 and Chromebooks in Years 5–6

  • Interactive Tools: Canva, Learning by Questions, Polypad and other digital manipulatives

  • Crash Courses & MiniMash: to support new pupils or those working towards early learning goals

  • Cross-Curricular Links: applying computing skills across Science, Maths, RE and English

EYFS Computing

In EYFS, we use MiniMash, a safe, interactive online space that builds fine motor control, problem-solving and early technology skills. Children explore early coding, digital art and simple drag-and-drop activities to prepare them for the KS1 curriculum.

Impact

We measure impact through:

  • Pupil voice: children can explain not just how but why they are doing something

  • Evidence of progression: work stored in digital portfolios and displayed in class

  • Independence: children select the right tool and problem-solve with resilience

  • Online behaviour: pupils demonstrate safe, respectful and responsible use of technology

“Technology is best when it brings people together.” – Matt Mullenweg

Our children leave SSPP digitally literate, responsible and ready for the next stage of their education.
